The Genome Centre at the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology of Dubai Police has officially joined the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN), an initiative established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
IPSN is a global platform that facilitates expertise exchange in infectious disease monitoring, epidemic surveillance, and pathogen detection through genomic sequencing technologies.
The network aims to enable early identification of emerging public health challenges and ensure rapid responses. It brings together research institutions and specialised laboratories from around the world, fostering scientific collaboration and the development of innovative solutions to tackle global health challenges.
Enhancing Health and Environmental Security
Major General Ahmad Thani bin Ghulaita, Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology, emphasised that Dubai Police’s participation in IPSN highlights its leadership in genomics and environmental analysis. He stated that this step aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen health and ecological security in the UAE.
Meanwhile, Colonel Engineer Rashid Lootah, Deputy Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology for Technical Affairs, described the membership as a significant milestone in Dubai Police’s mission to develop innovative solutions for pathogen detection and rapid response mechanisms. He added that the centre will expand its collaboration with international research institutions to enhance knowledge-sharing and expertise exchange.
Advancing Scientific Research
Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Muhammad Ali Al Marri, Director of the Genome Centre at Dubai Police, highlighted that joining the network will enable the centre to develop advanced technologies for pathogen surveillance and reinforce biological security in the UAE. He also noted that this membership will broaden research and technical cooperation on a global scale.
